Fandom, I’m side-eyeing a lot of you right now.

Let’s talk about how popular science bros is first, shall we? Let’s examine why it being so popular doesn’t quite make sense. If it’s MCU canon that Tony and Rhodey knew each other at MIT, that they were friendly enough to take a spring break trip together, why aren’t they the original science bros, a title fandom seems to have given to Yinsen? MIT isn’t some magical place where if you’re smart you get right in, you have to be smart as hell and have some sweet ass extracurriculars and probably some early research under your belt to get in. Yet Rhodey gets in, and he’s smart enough to catch and hold kid genius Tony Stark’s attention, he’s interesting enough that they go on a spring break trip together, and there is…nothing in fandom about it. Where’s the fic? Where’s the light hearted college fic you see with Tony and Bruce all over the place. Where are the college headcanons, the feels about Rhodey helping Tony deal with his bastard of a father? There is literally( trust me I’ve checked) nothing about any of that. Which, why? How is it possible that two characters who have so much on screen interactions, so many references to past fun being had( “we need to go to Monaco, that our thing” ring a bell for anyone?) and there is no explosion of fan art, headcanon posts, fics, playlists, NOTHING. Don’t even get me started on how smart you’d have to be to b able to work the suit and understand the interface as quickly as Rhodey understands it in IM2.

Shipping. There’s none. Once again, why? “They have no chemistry” you say. Really? Because I can think of several things, not even counting the fact that Tony has built and programmed a suit just for Rhodey. Just. For Him. Specifically. That make me want fic so bad I can taste it.“There’s not enough source material” What. Three movies of interaction and bonding are not enough source material? Sit down. People ship Steve/Tony MCU all day everyday, and they interacted in one movie, and couldn’t stand each other for 75% of it. “I just…can’t see them together.” Why. Don Cheadle is fine as hell, RDJ is fine as hell, I’d jump right smack dab in the middle of that spicy man sandwich. And, let’s take a second to be real and examine some shit. It’s because Rhodey’s black. “But..but I’m not racist, I have a black friend! One whole, black friend!” Yeah, but you probably still are sweet cheeks. Seeing as you’ll ship Tony with everyone under the sun except that black guy. And, hey I’m not saying you’re even conscious of it. I’m not saying you guys have ever thought “ew…Rhodey and Tony can’t go out, he’s black.” although some of you are iffy and you probably have. It’s not really a lot of you guy’s fault, black people show up in badass ass kicking heros, and sexy ass kicking badass heros at that so rarely that a lot of you just don’t know what to do with that. There is no way Rhodey can be equal to Tony, there is no way he could possibly be just as smart, albeit in different ways, there’s no way Tony could ever want to fuck him, let alone have a full blown relationship with him. Because Rhodey is the sidekick to you. Rhodey is the safe black friend who’s cool, but who never outshines Tony.

And yet, your attitudes about Pepper are perhaps even more disturbing and problematic that you opinions on Rhodey, who you often don’t care quite enough about to even bother posting rants about him.

TL:DR a lot of attitudes in fandom about Rhodey and his relationship with Tony are gross and need to stop.

I’m of two minds about this.

I agree in part, but part of the reason for this is because we all WERE the annoying Llewellyn pagans at one point. We were ALL the new converts who were getting everything wrong and looking at paganism as something new and pretty that we didn’t really understand yet and TOTALLY believing in “harm none” and generally annoying the hell out of the people who knew more than we did at one point. And we all grew out of that phase. So I think part of the reason we hate the ALPs is because we recognize we used to be there… and we kind of miss that wide-eyed wonder.

I don’t mind the ones who have just come to it, and that’s all they know. They can, indeed, grow out of it, and learn. I definitely do mind the ones who never grow out of it, who refuse to ever know any more. And I have definitely met them.

The hilarious double standard "Mexicans are lazy, and too stupid/can't be bothered to learn English" and "Mexicans are taking all our jobs". So, you're saying that you lost your job to a lazy person who doesn't speak English, how bad at your job were you?

it passes the Bechdel test and has lots of great female characters

(the gender ratio might be close to equal now that I think about it)

like a sweet, proud, tough sex worker who takes a lover outside her job and no one cares

and her sister, a mayor running a semi-frontier mining town

and an alien girl who might be a Grand Mystic Hero and is ruthless, reserved, loyal, and vulnerable

and an alien woman who weaves nefarious schemes while looking and acting angelic

and another minor but brilliant alien woman who runs a medical clinic with the sheer force of her dry, exasperated sarcasm

also there’s a lot of diversity

I’m not just talking aliens either

and nobody makes a big deal about sexual anything

I mean, they even discussed polyamory like it was a normal variation in romantic relationships

two dudes and one lady, no less

and the worldbuilding is pretty decent and getting better over time

the plots aren’t blowing me away yet, but it’s been an entertaining way to spend an hour every week

and barring some fanservice it’s been really damn progressive

Literally the only thing I can’t stand about Defiance is the nagging feeling that Syfy threw over all its OTHER original programming to promote it. Because ^^ all that is true and awesome but ugh Syfy your marketing dept needs to get its head out of its ass.

#But yes #Defiance #is a really good show for a lot of reasons #Although I’d like to point out in defense of #Warehouse 13 #that Warehouse ALSO accompliseshes a lot of these things #equal gender ratios #queer characters whose sexuality is not a plot point #diversity that just IS its not questioned #less sex in general and the fact that Pete seems to be the only one having it kinda sucks #but Warehouse also has older women who are bosses and bamfs without EVER having to justify that #and their age is NEVER made into an issue or considered a detriment #so yeah #ugh #sorry #this wasn’t supposed to be about Warehouse I know #but I am apparently still pissed about the cancellation (via racethewind10)

Because from the pilot, I only saw ONE POC, and I really can’t be assed to give a fuck about a sci fi show that follows the same old bullshit. Having tons of white women doing things is not enough.

Well, aside from the black lawkeeper, the McCawley family appears to be either Native or Chican@/Mestizo, and the actor who plays Rafe McCawley is definitely First Nations and the one who plays his daughter is Chicana, and they’re major characters. Their race has not been important so far, but class has been. Mostly, though, the aliens stand in for POC.

“As a trans woman, not many things give me a headache the way the entire concept of passing does. Passing is the idea that if a trans woman (or any person who is presenting as a woman) looks, dresses and acts a certain way, people won’t be able to tell they are anything other than a completely “normal” woman. If you look at online trans communities or forums, you’ll find tons of tips on how to pass better – everything from hair removal tips to workouts to how to walk and sit more femininely.
All of this presupposes that there is only one right way to look like and be a woman. And it’s infuriating. On the one hand, whenever I go out in public or post pictures online, a part of me is deathly afraid that I’ll be insulted or worse. I desperately want to be accepted as the woman I am. On the other hand, I hate that in order to feel safe, I’m expected to fit into the very narrow box that is labeled “woman.” Tips on how to pass always seem to say that you should avoid building muscle mass and avoid wearing clothes and makeup that are too costumey, that you should try to hide your shoulders and soften your features. Trans women are often told that if we want to pass, we have to try our hardest to be petite, soft, have just the right amount of femininity, and not stand out too much. But what if I want to be a different kind of woman? What if I want to look like Grace Jones or Kate Moennig? What if I want to look like Beth Ditto or Dolly Parton? They’re all cis women; don’t they pass?”
