“So I told them during this Lotus recording ‘you are working with a fat girl, know it now and get over it’. They need a reminder sometimes that I don’t BELONG to them, it’s my body. My body can’t put anyone in jeopardy of not making money anymore - My body is just not on the table that way anymore. I am 31, my boobs are Max’s and my pussy is mine…Sorry.”
The video for Christina Aguilera’s new single, coupled with this quote of hers from Billboard, makes me feel so hopeful for the future. What would happen if more and more people - POP STARS no less - started using the word “fat” and speaking about the fat on their bodies in empowered ways? Can we please make this happen?
Maybe perceptions of fatness really can change, when Christina fucking Aguilera is just like “Hey so I have an substantial amount of fat on my body that the world (especially the music industry) deems unacceptable, but fuck it. I WILL PROCLAIM THAT I AM FAT AND THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH MY FATNESS. Let’s do this shit.”
Blunt talk about fatness. It’s a start and a step in the right direction.
Also, the colors in this fucking music video are magic and the song is fierce. I’ve been down and dirrtay with CA since I tried to recreate the video to “Come On Over Baby” in my basement with my sister, so I am all about all of this.
Like other people have said:
Where is she fat? Can you point it out to me?
Seriously. Lady Gaga and Christina Aguilera talkin’ about how they’re accepting~*~* their bodies after putting on weight.
Like. Fine. Good. Accept your bodies. I want that for everyone.
But they’re not fucking fat. They’re not! They’re not.
And I’m fucking tired of average sized women reclaiming fat when THEY ARE NOT FAT.
I’m fat.
It’s my fucking word to reclaim.
Because she gained 15 pounds and considered herself fat. But I could lose over 50 pounds and I would still be 3 times her size.
And you can sit there and say she’s considered fat when she’s next to other pop stars. But that doesn’t make it true. That just means that our perception is still fucked up, and we need to work on correcting that.
The song is whatever. The music video is great. But she is not fat.
I was waiting for somebody to say this because I try to stay out of stuff about celebrities—shakethecobwebs took the world right outta my gotdamn mouth, bless you.
I will not huddle around women like Christina Aguilera like she’s the last candle flickering in the windy dark. She’s accepting her body? Good for her. I’m not going to praise her for it, because at the end of the day, she’s rich, she passes for white, and she can maneuver in the world like a thin person can even with criticism from the industry.
Christina Aguilera, ‘you move like they do’. And I don’t mean she’s being subversive or that she’s fighting the good fight pitting fire with fire. I mean she’s made her money, got her fame, and now she wants to say, “Oh yeah, I forgot to mention how I was told to lose weight but now I want to fly in the face of the industry.”
This is not the revolution, or even a revolution. This is yet another celebrity getting credit for a justice movement that she helped to undermine with her whole damn career. Miss. me. with. that. mess.
bolded mineee
I just can’t deal with these thin/white/cis/able-bodied women getting lauded for saying shit that actual fat folks get harassed for saying. And guess what? The reason Christina and Lady Gaga are getting praised for this is BECAUSE THEY ARE THIN. When a thin person “reclaims” (or rather claims, steals) the word fat? OMG SO REVOLUTIONARY LET’S KISS THE GROUND THEY WALK ON. When a fat person reclaims the word fat? UM EXCUSE ME GROSS FATTY YOU CAN’T DO THAT BECAUSE YOU ARE GROSS AND FAT AND YOU ARE GOING TO DROP DEAD AT ANY MOMENT WHY DON’T YOU STOP EATING DONUTS FOR TWO SECONDS AND HOP ON THE TREADMILL FATTY!?
The commentary is gold.
I agree with all of the comments but the quote going around is fake. I have only been able to find the quote on tumblr and the comments about her record company telling her to lose weight has only shown up in relation to Lady Gaga. This link has copies of the interview.
Reblogged for the commentary. Aguilera didn’t say it, that’s great, but seriously I do not ever want to hear thin women talking about how fat they are, whether they’re supposedly accepting it or not.
