I Have Privilege

To every person who cannot stand being called “privileged”… please watch this.

[Hi.

I’m BlinkPink.

And I have privilege.

I’m white

Able-bodied

Educated

Between the ages of 18 to 55 (even if I don’t always act like it)

Fairly average body size

And then, there’s the buzz word.

Allistic

And all of these things carry privilege. No no no, shut up. They do.

If you can use the word “normal” when explaining an aspect of your life (by societal standards or even just in your own mind), you have privilege.

That, in and of its self, is not a bad thing. It’s not bad to have privilege. It’s inherent. It’s what the world gives you for looking and behaving a certain way, even if it’s something you could not help but do. It’s not unlike being oppressed, in that you cannot help the way you are.

But, since you have the privilege, logically that means that someone else does NOT. And being unaware of it is just an excuse, not an absolution.

Now. That being said. When you stand behind it screaming, “NUH UHHHH~”, then that is a mark against you as a person. No. I’m being serious. When you deny that you have privilege, that is you doing a bad job at being a decent person worthy of being around others in society.

And when you then use it to bludgeon others, ignoring lifetimes of oppression, violence, silencing tactics and shaming just so that you can’t be said to even have privilege, then you are a fucking douchebag.

Total.
