I am reading Lion’s Blood
“Amazon.com Review: “In the year 1863, a primitive village is raided, the men killed, and the women and children captured. The survivors find themselves chained in the dark, filthy hold of a ship c…”

This book and its sequel are a really good read. I can’t promise that they’re not problematic (it’s been several years since I read them), but they were written by a black man.
I was actually just thinking about these books two days ago, and wanting to reread them. There’s also an album, Insh’Allah: The Music of Lion’s Blood, by Heather Alexander (you can find it here, but there’s no direct link to the individual album). Some of the songs from it appear in the book. I really like it, but the artist is a friend of a friend, so take that with a grain of salt.
But the books are really good. I wish I could find my copies, or ebooks of them.
